New to yoga?

I am not flexible at all; never have been. So while I was intrigued by yoga, I figured I wasn’t cut out for it. That all changed, though, when I decided on a whim to try yoga with Missy Balsam. Missy is an amazing teacher … very patient and extremely encouraging without pushing you beyond your limitations. I never feel inadequate in class for not achieving a certain pose. As Missy says, “Yoga is a practice.” Sure, I still can’t touch my toes, but with Missy’s guidance I’m sure it will happen someday!

There are many different styles of yoga out there, and it can be pretty daunting to know where to begin. For me, yoga is simply about feeling good. Feeling good in your body - stronger, more flexible and agile - is a pathway to feeling good in your mind, heart and spirit. Yoga is about unleashing the happiness that is already there, inside every one of us - it’s just that we are often too distracted, or caught up in our own stories to feel it. Yoga is the process of letting go of fears and our own self-perceived limitations, and coming to the empowering realization that we are already whole and complete, just as we are.

Everybody can do yoga. Most students come back to yoga again and again, year after year, because it makes them feel so good. After a yoga class, you feel like you have had a great massage. Yoga promotes well-being on every level by:

  • balancing the nervous system
  • massaging the internal organs
  • releasing excess muscle tension
  • improving circulation of the blood and lymphatic system
  • calming the mind
  • leaving you feeling relaxed and energized at the same time

All you need to bring to class is a yoga mat and a positive, can-do attitude. My philosophy is just show up and do the best you can. If you are concerned about your ability, no worries! Everyone works at their own level and there is no competition. Be prepared to sweat, laugh, be inspired and make new friends!

Finding the right teacher makes a big difference. Come to my class or schedule a private session with me, and experience feeling lighter, happier, more at peace. Allow me to show you how wonderful yoga makes you feel, and what an amazing journey of self-discovery it is. You will be so happy you did!

My wife got me started in Missy’s yoga classes last year and I have become a dedicated student. The most direct and measurable impact is the benefit to my golf game. I can confidently say that yoga has taken me from a 10 to an 8 handicap. All the components of yoga have benefitted my golf game. Balance- less thin and fat shots. Flexibility- better hip and shoulder turn, better arm extension in backswing and in follow through. Breathing- looser relaxed swing, better consistency. Core strength- endurance, not as tired during last holes. All of the above- 2 club difference on distance. I really cannot understand why more men don’t practice yoga. As we men age, we need the benefits of yoga much more than the usual groups of women that you see in yoga classes. Yoga will be a part of my exercise program for the rest of my life and I believe will be a factor in making it a longer and more enjoyable one.
